Adam Abdul-Jabbar, the son of NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, was taken into custody in June 2020 for allegedly stabbing his neighbor multiple times.
Adam has faced a six-month jail term for stabbing a neighbor in Southern California with a hunting knife during a dispute over trash cans, according to prosecutors. The 29-year-old pleaded guilty to three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of carrying a dirk or dagger, along with additional charges for causing serious harm.
Abdul-Jabbar agreed to a plea deal offered by the judge. The actual sentencing has been postponed until January 7 so that Abdul-Jabbar can request home confinement instead of serving time in jail, stated the DA’s office.
Prosecutors had originally pushed for a seven-year prison sentence and were against the leniency of the plea deal.
District Attorney Todd Spitzer commented, “This lenient punishment is a clear injustice. The victim suffered severe injuries due to repeated brutal stabbings, almost bleeding to death right outside the emergency room.”
“We strongly believe that such disregard for human life during a trivial argument about trash cans deserves a harsher punishment in the form of imprisonment.”
The violent altercation occurred in June 2020 when Adam and his neighbor shared a driveway. Following a confrontation over the neighbor’s failure to bring in the trash cans for Abdul-Jabbar’s elderly roommate, he proceeded to stab the neighbor multiple times, as per officials. One of the stab wounds resulted in the victim experiencing a brain bleed due to a fractured skull.
“The victim, aged 60, sustained a fractured skull and was on the brink of death due to excessive blood loss after collapsing near the emergency room,” prosecutors reported last year.
Spitzer remarked, “No disagreement between neighbors should ever escalate to such violence, especially with the extreme brutality displayed in this incident. Any form of violence will not be tolerated in Orange County, and individuals resorting to violence will face legal consequences.”
