In a profile on Raiders owner Mark Davis featured on HBO’s “Real Sports,” coach Jon Gruden expressed his support for Davis and defended him against those who constantly ridicule his appearance.
Gruden dismissed the criticism, saying, “I think that’s a bunch of nonsense. If you know Mark Davis, you appreciate Mark Davis. And if you don’t, you can form your own opinion.”
The coach commended Davis for his resilience and dedication: “Sorry he wasn’t as experienced as some of the other owners, but he got here and he learned fast. He probably faced criticism from some quarters, but he persevered, progressed, and brought us to where we are today.”
Mark Davis has successfully relocated the team to Las Vegas, with a modern stadium and a competitive team.
“I hope he would be very, very happy and proud,” Davis remarked on establishing Raider Nation in southern Nevada at Allegiant Stadium. “But they won. We have to win. That’s where I have to get it right.”
Reflecting on his father’s legacy, Davis acknowledged the battles fought and the importance of maintaining positive relationships within the NFL community.
“He fought a lot of battles, and he was right in the battles he fought,” Davis said. “But sometimes you win the battles, but lose the war.
“I felt maybe it’s a little easier to get things done with sugar rather than salt. I felt like I wanted to start on a clean slate with the NFL and the other owners. I thought it was important to do that.”
