After a challenging year that saw Drew Robinson leave professional baseball following a suicide attempt that cost him his right eye, the 29-year-old athlete made a triumphant return on Tuesday night with a home run for the Sacramento River Cats. Despite his impressive performance, the River Cats ultimately fell to the Las Vegas Aviators with a score of 10-7.
In a recent ESPN feature, Robinson’s journey back to the field was highlighted, shedding light on his advocacy for mental health awareness in the process.
“This was a significant moment,” Robinson shared with ESPN, reflecting on his own mental health struggles. “It was a painful reminder that I’m meant to support others in overcoming challenges they may feel are insurmountable.”
Having now equipped with a prosthetic eye, Robinson has resumed his professional career with the San Francisco Giants organization. He inked a deal with their minor league affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats, in November 2020. Currently competing at the Triple-A level, just a step below Major League Baseball, Robinson is determined to validate his place on the team.
“Even with both my eyes intact, baseball presented its difficulties,” Robinson expressed to ESPN. “I strive to earn my spot on merit and not as a gesture of sympathy.”
The River Cats are slated to face Oklahoma City in their upcoming game on Thursday.
