Bill Belichick, the head coach of the New England Patriots, has turned down the offer of the Medal of Freedom from President Trump. Belichick, who previously supported the President, cited the Capitol riot as the reason for his decision.

Belichick expressed his stance in a statement released on Monday:

“I was recently offered the presidential Medal of Freedom, which I was honored by, considering the significance of the award and the recipients it has been bestowed upon. However, following the distressing events of last week, I have chosen to decline the offer.”

“Above all, I am a proud American who deeply respects our country’s values, freedom, and democratic principles. I understand that I am not only representing myself but also my family and the New England Patriots organization. One of the most fulfilling moments of my career came in 2020 when, under our team’s exceptional leadership, conversations about social justice, equality, and human rights evolved into tangible actions.

“Continuing these efforts while remaining loyal to the community, team, and nation that I hold dear is more meaningful to me than any individual recognition.”

Belichick is recognized as one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of the NFL.
