The recent months have been challenging for everyone as they navigate life during a dangerous pandemic. This has been especially hard on small businesses across all states financially.
In Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer implemented closures of certain businesses and schools in the state for three weeks, a decision that did not sit well with Kelly Stafford.
Kelly, who is married to Matthew Stafford, the quarterback for the Detroit Lions, turned to her Instagram to voice her frustrations. Her comments were transcribed by clickondetroit.com:
“So I’m going to be very blunt: I’m so tired of it. I’m tired of living under such strict rules in what we refer to as Michigan. I understand there’s a pandemic, and I know it’s very scary. I am fearful too. If you’re vulnerable, please stay home until there’s a vaccine.
“But shutting down all these small businesses—businesses that people have dedicated their lives to—shutting them down again is not the solution, because they won’t survive. So when we’re finally allowed to leave our homes, once this strict governance permits us some freedoms, there will be nothing left.
“I’ve had enough. I see all these individuals and it brings me to tears. And trust me, I know there are people out there who might say, ‘That’s very ignorant of you. How could you say that?’ Listen, I understand not everyone will agree with me. Not everyone will support every decision I make. That’s life, alright? We express our viewpoints, and we move forward.
“This is my viewpoint. My heart goes out to these small businesses. It isn’t that I don’t sympathize with those affected by COVID, including the hospitals. I do. But this is my standpoint. I don’t appreciate residing in a place where they dictate what I can or cannot do. We live once. Once more, this is my perspective. You have yours, everyone has their own, and we respect that.”
