The NFL called off the Sunday match-up between the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs when Patriots’ quarterback Cam Newton contracted COVID-19.

Several sources report that Newton will not participate in the team’s fourth-week game, set to take place in Kansas City. The game, originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, has been rescheduled for early next week, possibly on Monday or Tuesday. This change came after the Chiefs raised concerns about the Patriots flying in so soon after Newton’s positive test was confirmed.

On Saturday morning, the Patriots issued a statement announcing that an unnamed player had tested positive for the virus. The player was tested on Friday night and immediately isolated upon receiving the results. The statement mentioned that all individuals who had been in close contact with the player were tested on Saturday morning, and thankfully, their results were negative.

ESPN was the first to identify the player as Newton. The 31-year-old quarterback joined the New England team on a one-year contract following Tom Brady’s departure to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The NFL has also postponed the Steelers-Titans game scheduled for Sunday.
