LeBron James has taken a stand against a political ad campaign known as Protect My Vote for misusing one of his tweets to cast doubt on the validity of mail-in voting.
On Friday, the NBA star from the Los Angeles Lakers tweeted, “Nobody should be able to use my name (or anyone else’s name) to lie and deceive about the election.” He further emphasized the need for awareness and vigilance regarding misinformation surrounding the election, urging people to join the @morethanavote initiative to combat suppression through misinformation.
In response to the unauthorized use of his tweet, James expressed his determination to address the issue legally, stating, “Not sure what we can do legally but definitely trying to figure it out! #StayWoke #LoveMyPeople.”
Adam Mendelsoh, an advisor to James, criticized the ads as “shameless” and “reprehensible,” revealing that legal professionals are actively investigating the situation.
The controversial ads reportedly distorted a tweet by James from June 20, in which he shared a post by author Ari Berman regarding the closure of polling locations in Kentucky during a primary election and expressed his frustration over systemic racism and oppression.
Following James’ reaction, Facebook promptly removed the Protect My Vote page utilizing his image to propagate misinformation about mail-in voting.
