Dallas Cowboys’ defensive tackle Gerald McCoy suffered a ruptured right quadriceps tendon during the team’s first padded practice at training camp. As a result, McCoy will undergo surgery, ending his season prematurely.
This injury came as a significant setback for McCoy, who had signed a three-year, $18 million contract in the offseason.
The injury occurred during individual drills, and McCoy was unable to bear weight on his leg following an examination by the team’s medical staff. Despite attempting to walk unassisted, McCoy ultimately had to be assisted off the field. An MRI later confirmed the extent of the tear in his quad.
Within 24 hours of the injury, the team decided to release McCoy by utilizing an injury waiver related to the quad injury stipulated in his contract. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported this development.
McCoy is entitled to keep his $3 million signing bonus but will not receive any further payments from the Cowboys.
Despite the setback, McCoy maintained a positive attitude and shared a video of himself getting ready for surgery on Tuesday.
“I just want to say, I’m still smiling,” McCoy expressed. “To my teammates, coaches, y’all go and get it. Got a championship to go win.”
