An NBA photographer was terminated after sharing a meme on social media that targeted Senator Kamala Harris following her selection as Joe Biden’s running mate in the 2020 presidential election. The photographer, Bill Baptist, had been working with the Houston Rockets for over three decades before his dismissal. He was not only fired but also removed from the NBA bubble at Disney’s property in Orlando, Florida.
The meme Baptist posted featured Joe Biden’s official 2020 campaign logo, but instead of “Joe 2020” in the blue circle, it said “Jo and the Ho.” He shared this image on Facebook without providing any commentary.
Following Baptist’s termination, WNBA Hall of Fame recipient Sheryl Swoopes expressed her opinion on Facebook, stating, “It’s amazing how people will smile in your face but eventually their true colors will show. @NBA and Houston Rockets he needs to GO!!! So disrespectful. Bill Baptiste (sic) shame on You!!!”
NBA spokespersons informed KPRC 2 that Baptist, an independent contractor, is no longer providing services in Orlando. In response to the incident, Baptist issued a statement expressing regret for reposting a phrase he had seen from others as a example of reactions to Biden selecting Senator Harris as his VP nominee. He clarified that the phrase did not represent his personal beliefs and acknowledged the insensitivity of sharing such statements authored by others. Baptist extended a sincere apology to all those who were rightfully offended by his actions.
