The NBA community received tragic news on December 16, with the Phoenix Suns announcing the passing of franchise icon Dick Van Arsdale at the age of 81.

Van Arsdale, a shooting guard, spent most of his career with the Phoenix Suns, playing 9 out of his 12 seasons there from 1968 to 1976, while also serving time with the New York Knicks. Throughout his career, he averaged 12.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.

In the wake of his death, the franchise issued a statement honoring him as the “Original Sun.”

“We are heartbroken by the news of Suns legend Dick Van Arsdale’s passing, the ‘Original Sun’ and a cherished member of our Ring of Honor.

He was the first pick in the expansion draft to create the Suns roster and scored the first points in the franchise’s history, marking him as a foundational figure for the organization,” the organization stated.

“A three-time All-Star, he participated in the team’s inaugural NBA Finals in 1976 and finished his career as the franchise’s all-time leading scorer until 1977. Van Arsdale was loved by the Suns community and held numerous roles with the team after retiring, including broadcaster and front office executive.
