Malachi Capers, a former defensive end at Buffalo State, was recently a victim of gun violence. He is currently recovering from his injuries after being shot in the stomach at close range following an argument that ensued when he accidentally bumped into a man at a corner store.
According to a report by WKBW, the altercation escalated when Capers was punched by the man, prompting Capers to chase and tackle him to the ground. The situation took a violent turn when the man pulled out a gun and shot Capers at close range.
Capers is currently in the hospital in critical condition as he battles his injuries.
A tweet issued on Wednesday afternoon confirmed that the prime suspect in the case, identified as Jeffrey Thurston, is now in police custody.
Head Coach Christian Ozolins of Buffalo State Football described Capers as a “great kid” and a “hard-worker” who was beloved by his teammates. Ozolins praised Capers for his initiative and willingness to take risks during the recruiting process, highlighting his selflessness and determination.
