After discontinuing the use of their former team moniker, the ‘Redskins,’ recently, the Washington NFL team has been confronted with the task of selecting a new team name. They have decided to go with the simple placeholder name of the Washington NFL Team.

The newly selected team name was announced on Thursday but is intended as a temporary solution for the upcoming 2020 season. As training camp commences next week, the team will have a chance to carefully deliberate and choose a more permanent name moving forward. Although the team will retain their current colors, they will be phasing out their logo, which depicts the head of a Native American.

A statement from the team clarified, “The choice of ‘Washington Football Team’ for this season allows the organization to engage in a comprehensive branding process that includes input from players, alumni, fans, the community, and sponsors. We have been thrilled to see the numerous suggestions for the new name and design shared on social media channels, and we are eager to incorporate this feedback as we move forward in the process.”

The decision to part with the team’s former nickname came following pressure from sponsors, after facing years of criticism from Native American advocacy groups. To oversee the brand transition, the team recently brought on Terry Bateman as the executive vice president and chief marketing officer.
