Businesses belonging to Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and retired boxer Floyd Mayweather have reportedly obtained loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), recent data shows.
Brady’s fitness brand, TB12 Inc., received loans ranging from $350,000 to $1 million, while Mayweather Promotions based in Las Vegas also secured a loan within the same range, as per NBC Boston report.
Mayweather, one of the highest-earning athletes globally with $915 million from 2010 to 2017 according to Forbes, and Brady, who recently signed a $50 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have faced criticism for benefiting from a program designed to support smaller businesses impacted by the mid-March shutdown.
Several sports personalities, teams in Major League Soccer and NASCAR, U.S. Olympics sports organizations, and numerous boxing firms, including Top Rank owned by legendary promoter Bob Arum, have also sought PPP aid in recent times.
Unsurprisingly, social media users quickly reacted to this news, expressing their discontent:
