It appears that the situation was a result of a misunderstanding.
The FBI has issued a statement regarding the NASCAR incident involving a noose found in Bubba Wallace’s garage at Talladega Motorspeedway.
According to the FBI, after extensive interviews and investigations, they have determined that no hate crime took place.
“On Monday, fifteen FBI special agents conducted numerous interviews related to the incident at Talladega Superspeedway. Following a thorough examination of the facts and evidence, we have concluded that no federal crime occurred.
Investigations revealed that garage number 4, where the noose was discovered, was assigned to Bubba Wallace just the past week. It was also found that authentic video footage confirmed by NASCAR indicated that the noose had been in garage number 4 as early as October 2019. While the presence of the noose in 2019 has been established, it was not foreseeable that Mr. Wallace would be assigned to garage number 4 last week.
After assessing all the available facts and relevant federal laws, the decision to not pursue federal charges is deemed appropriate. We express our gratitude to NASCAR, Mr. Wallace, and all those who cooperated with the investigation.”
The discovery of the noose was announced by NASCAR on Sunday night, shortly after Wallace advocated for the ban of the Confederate flag at NASCAR tracks. The series expressed strong condemnation for the act, stating, “We are angry and outraged and cannot emphasize enough how seriously we take this despicable act. As we have repeatedly stated, NASCAR stands firmly against racism, and this incident further strengthens our commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.”
