There has never been a college football quarterback quite like Trevor Lawrence, who has used his platform to advocate for change following the tragic death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.
The quarterback for the Clemson Tigers spoke out at a Black Lives Matter rally on Saturday. He first talked to reporters and then addressed the crowd at the protest, emphasizing the importance of embracing discomfort.

“Over the past few weeks, I have experienced discomfort,” Lawrence expressed to the crowd. “Being uncomfortable is crucial in our journey toward equality. I have come to realize that true progress stems from bravery and facing discomfort. It may be uncomfortable to set aside my understanding of America and truly listen to someone else’s perspective. However, it is essential.”
“The momentum of recent weeks has been instrumental in enabling us to organize this rally and exercise our right to do so, which has been empowering,” Lawrence shared with reporters. “As seniors, we met two weeks ago at Coach [Dabo] Swinney’s residence to discuss the current state of affairs in our nation and how we each feel. Through these conversations, we began to comprehend each other better, and this led to team-wide discussions the following week. We recognized the value of uniting people peacefully for a common cause. Today, we felt that hosting this rally was a positive step forward. We ensured a peaceful environment for meaningful change to take place.”
Lawrence also delivered a speech at the rally.
“In the past month, I’ve gained significant insights,” Lawrence shared with the crowd. “There are three key lessons I am learning. Firstly, I am learning to listen more; understanding often derives from listening rather than speaking. Listening allows for learning and comprehension. Secondly, I am striving to empathize with those who are suffering. Practicing empathy and compassion is critical as we navigate the path to reconciliation.
“Lastly, I am realizing the power of love to overcome all obstacles and drive change,” Lawrence continued. “A verse that resonates with me during these times is 1 Peter 4:8, which states, ‘Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.’
“So, let’s persevere in listening, learning, and loving, even when it feels uncomfortable—especially in those moments,” Lawrence urged. “It is in these uncomfortable times that real change occurs. The future will be shaped by our actions today, leading to a better world for generations to come. Thank you all for joining us, and may this event mark just one of many positive steps toward progress in the days ahead.”
