Trevor Lawrence is making a strong effort to return to the field for the Jaguars, but his status is still in question as he grapples with a persistent left shoulder injury.
The starting quarterback, who has missed two games due to a sprained AC joint, practiced earlier this week and is striving to be ready for the game against the Texans this Sunday. However, the long-term outlook remains unclear.
Lawrence participated in Monday’s practice and, as reported by head coach Doug Pederson, was expected to take most of the first-team reps on Wednesday. This is an encouraging update, although Lawrence has acknowledged that the situation is anything but simple.
Addressing reporters, he confessed that surgical intervention for his injury is “not off the table” and made it clear that his recovery will be assessed on a weekly basis.
“Hopefully I’m able to get back out there this week or as soon as possible and then it’s going to be just every week kind of evaluating it, seeing where it’s at,” Lawrence mentioned through ESPN’s Michael DiRocco. “Up until this point, I’ve been doing everything I can to avoid [surgery] and want to be back out there with my guys to finish the season. That’s my goal.”
In Lawrence’s absence, backup Mac Jones has stepped in, securing a 1-1 record before the team’s bye week. Should Lawrence be unable to participate, Jones would likely take the lead again.
The Jaguars are set to face a pivotal matchup against a resurgent Texans team, and Lawrence’s potential presence or absence could significantly influence the game’s outcome. For now, Jacksonville remains optimistic yet cautious, as they navigate the delicate balance between immediate performance and long-term health considerations.
