Jerry Jones made a heartfelt promise on Friday night that the NFL will continue its operations in 2020, stating, “we’ll have football,” as he became emotional and choked up. He expressed hope that the efforts being made currently will result in fans being able to enjoy real football in the coming weeks and months.
The owner of the Dallas Cowboys took the time to address reporters for over 35 minutes, discussing the second day of the NFL draft and the profound impact of COVID-19 on the NFL, other sporting events, and society in general.
“I believe that the NFL and sports, in general, have played a crucial role in providing a distraction and maintaining a sense of normalcy. The NFL Draft, which garnered record viewership during its initial days, served as an example of how sports can offer a much-needed respite,”
He continued,
“Our actions and decisions today will significantly influence the future of our country. Just like how landing on the moon changed the world, our current efforts can bring about transformative changes that will impact us all. I envision our sport making a positive difference, and the success of the NFL Draft was a step in the right direction.”
While some criticized the league for conducting the draft amidst the pandemic, many viewed it as a welcome diversion from the distressing news cycles dominated by the relentless spread of the virus.
Expressing his optimism for the future, Jones shared his belief that the country will eventually return to normalcy. He said,
“There is no doubt that we will bounce back as a nation. And when we do, as history has shown, we will emerge stronger than ever before.”
