Challenges Persist in the NFL

Poor match-ups. Inconsistent officiating. Controversial protests on the sidelines, even drawing criticism from the White House.

Despite these issues, the NFL continues to be a powerhouse in TV ratings.

After facing difficulties in 2016 and 2017, TV ratings made a comeback in 2018 and by mid-October of this year, they were 5 percent higher compared to the previous year. This increase is also 8 percent better than in 2017.

The rise of young talent has played a significant role. Players like Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, and Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans have injected new energy into the quarterback position, creating more excitement. Running backs such as Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers and Alvin Kamara from the New Orleans Saints have also contributed to the thrill of the game.

Interestingly, the NFL’s TV ratings remain strong even as some of its top teams from major markets struggle.

Teams like those from New York and Los Angeles are unlikely to make the playoffs this season. Additionally, no team in the NFC East has a winning record, and the Chicago Bears have not performed as well as they did last year. The Miami Dolphins and the Atlanta Falcons are also struggling.

Considering the importance of these big markets and iconic teams, the NFL’s ability to maintain solid TV ratings in the face of their poor performances is noteworthy. The Giants, the Jets, and the Bears have a strong national following, contributing to the league’s overall success.

This resilience will be on full display this Saturday as the NFL hosts a triple-header on the NFL Network. The NFL has shown its ability to withstand challenges and remains a leader in TV ratings.
