A group of 10 ex-NFL players, including five former Washington players like Clinton Portis and Carlos Rogers, have been charged with manipulating the league’s healthcare system. The Department of Justice uncovered their actions on Thursday.

They are said to have taken advantage of the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan, which was established in 2006 to cover expenses not covered by the health insurance of retired players or their family members.

These players are accused of submitting fraudulent claims totaling $4 million, resulting in a payout of nearly $3.4 million between June 2017 and December 2018.

According to court documents, eight of the players, including Portis, allegedly filed claims for expensive medical equipment that they never purchased or received.

Portis earned over $43 million during his time in the NFL.
