On Thanksgiving Day, former NFL player Colin Kaepernick spoke at the “Indigenous People’s Sunrise Ceremony” on Alcatraz Island, also known as “Unthanksgiving.”
Kaepernick expressed solidarity with the Indigenous community and highlighted the historical injustices faced by Indigenous people, with the U.S. government taking over 1.5 billion acres of their land.
Kaepernick emphasized the importance of honoring ancestors and continuing the fight for justice, urging unity and support for elders in the ongoing struggle.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a basketball icon, criticized Fox News for labeling Kaepernick as a “Black Grinch” and rejecting his advocacy for social justice. Abdul-Jabbar highlighted the issue of racial bias and accused some of undermining Kaepernick’s activism by misrepresenting his message.
Abdul-Jabbar pointed out that Kaepernick’s actions are based on values of equality and fairness, contrary to the portrayal of him by certain media outlets. He noted that Kaepernick’s dissent was met with unfounded personal attacks and attempts to discredit his activism.
Amid Kaepernick’s recent tryout for the NFL, Abdul-Jabbar questioned the motivations behind the event, suggesting it was more about optics than genuine consideration for his return to the league. He criticized the attempts to undermine Kaepernick’s credibility as an activist and spokesperson for social causes.
Abdul-Jabbar emphasized the long-standing challenges faced by truth-tellers and activists who speak out against injustice, emphasizing the importance of staying true to principles despite opposition.
