According to the Wall Street Journal, the FBI has launched an investigation into USA Swimming following complaints that the organization obstructed athletes from reporting incidents of sexual abuse.
An insider revealed that a complicated system was in place that made it challenging for individuals to come forward with their claims. This system has since been removed, and allegations must now be reported directly to law enforcement. Furthermore, Olympic bodies like USA Swimming are mandated to notify the US Center for Safesport of any allegations.
The case has been presented to a grand jury in New York for the past year, with a separate inquiry into the organization’s business practices also underway.
A spokesperson for USA Swimming stated to the journal that they are in full support of any governmental efforts aimed at safeguarding athletes.
USA Swimming oversees one of the most successful swimming teams globally, with American athletes securing nearly a third of all swimming medals at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
Nevertheless, this investigation could potentially cast a shadow over the organization as they prepare for the upcoming Tokyo Games next year.
