Owner of Maximum Security Plans to Appeal Kentucky Derby Outcome

The owner of Maximum Security, Gary West, stated his intention to contest the Kentucky Derby’s result by appealing to the state racing commission. Despite crossing the finish line first on Saturday, Maximum Security was later disqualified due to an interference objection.

During an appearance on NBC’s “Today” show, West suggested the possibility of pursuing legal action, stating, “If the state racing commission does not address this issue, it is significant enough that the entire horse racing community is paying attention.”

Following a 22-minute review, race officials concluded that Maximum Security had interfered with several other horses, leading to Country House, the runner-up with long odds of 65-1, being declared the new winner of the Kentucky Derby.

In an interview on the ‘Today’ show, West expressed his emotions about the outcome, stating, “It felt like the classic TV show where there’s a mix of joy and sorrow, all unfolding within 22 minutes. The disappointment when our horse was disqualified for the first time in history – it left us stunned, bewildered, and utterly disbelieving.”

Maximum Security will not compete in the upcoming Preakness Stakes, the second race of the Triple Crown, scheduled for May 18.
