Marcel Hirscher, the accomplished skier from Austria, captured his eighth consecutive overall World Cup title on March 10, 2019. His latest win came after securing third place in the penultimate slalom event of the season. French alpine skier Alexis Pinturault, an Olympic medalist with 22 World Cup wins, finished second, with four more events on the schedule for the World Cup Finals in the upcoming week.

Hirscher currently leads Pinturault by 509 points, with a maximum of 100 points up for grabs. He holds a commanding lead in the standings and all eyes are now on the remaining World Cup Finals events. When asked about the potential for a ninth consecutive title, Hirscher mentioned the importance of family and balancing his priorities, as reported by CNN.

Hirscher has been a standout performer in the World Cup Finals, clinching the giant slalom and slalom crystal globes this season. His impressive achievements have drawn comparisons to retired skiing legend Lindsey Vonn, who boasts 20 discipline and overall titles.

In terms of World Cup victories, Hirscher ranks third with 68 wins, trailing Vonn in second place with 82 wins. The leader in this category is a former Swedish alpine skier with 86 World Cup wins. Hirscher’s dominance is evident in his unparalleled streak of eight consecutive overall victories.

Setting More Records: Hirscher’s triumph is not the only historic moment in skiing, as two-time Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin made history by becoming the first skier to achieve 15 wins in a single World Cup season.
