Red Sox Pitcher Steven Wright Receives an 80-Game Ban for Performance-Enhancing Drugs Violation

Steven Wright, a pitcher for the Red Sox, has been handed an 80-game suspension by MLB for using performance-enhancing drugs. This is his second suspension in the last two years. Previously, he was banned for 15 games for a domestic assault incident. Wright claims he is unsure how the banned substances got into his system.

In response to the ban, Wright expressed his resignation, saying, “It is what it is, and I’ve just got to move on from it. That’s what’s frustrating about it,” in an interview with Press Pool.

The suspension will be effective at the start of the 2019 MLB season. If the Red Sox, the current World Series champions, reach the playoffs, Wright will not be permitted to pitch. Moreover, he will incur a financial loss of more than $687,000, which is half of his season’s salary.

Wright, who also missed the playoffs last year due to a knee injury, serves as a reliever and starter for the team.
