India’s Davis Cup journey against Italy didn’t end as expected, but it was still a captivating competition. Despite some noticeable inconsistencies due to the new format and rules in the championship, the players’ performances were encouraging. The defeat brought some positives for India, especially with Divij Sharan’s impressive display in the doubles match.

Significant changes have been made to the traditional 119-year-old Davis Cup format, such as fewer matches, a Saturday finish, and hosting both home and away games in the World Finals. These changes have faced mixed reviews globally, with Italy captain Corrado Barazutti expressing satisfaction and likening it to a prestigious Grand Slam event.

The impact of these format changes will be clearer after the Finals conclude in November. Players have generally welcomed some of the adjustments, acknowledging the historical significance of the championship. Andreas Seppi, who competed in multiple singles matches, appreciated the shift to best-of-three sets, considering his age and physical condition after playing 27 ties.

Seppi, aged 34, remarked, “I preferred five sets, but as I’m getting older, the best-of-three format is kinder to my body.” The Saturday finish allowed him an extra day for travel before his upcoming tournament, preventing excessive fatigue that would have resulted from back-to-back five-set matches in previous formats.
