The esports industry has been dealing with issues of harassment and toxic behavior, particularly highlighted after the Gamergate scandal in 2014, where a group of male gamers targeted women in the industry. Women often express feeling marginalized and are frequently subjected to hurtful remarks about their skills and appearance. Even prominent female gamers face challenges not just from fans but also from their competitors and colleagues. In a predominantly male-dominated field, women encounter significant levels of hostility.

For instance, Kim’s team, London Spitfire, secured the first Overwatch League championship in June. In an interview with The Associated Press before the finals, Kim acknowledged that there are highly skilled women capable of competing in the Overwatch League. However, many choose to opt out due to the challenges they anticipate facing in the industry.

Maria “Remilia” Creveling holds the distinction of being the sole female and transgender individual to have participated in the LoL Championship Series (LCS), the most prestigious professional league in the esports world. Unfortunately, her time in the LCS was marked by a lack of support and, at times, negativity from certain fans.

Creveling, known for her support role, entered the LCS with Renegades in 2015. Her debut season was marred by severe criticism and sexist commentary directed at her during Renegades’ live streams. Her gender identity was questioned, and disparaging remarks were made about her appearance and skills. After a few weeks into the season, Creveling decided to step down from the Renegades’ roster citing issues related to anxiety and self-esteem. She has not returned to the LCS since then.
