Georgia’s freshman quarterback, Justin Fields, is reportedly exploring the option of transferring to another school. However, he has not informed the Bulldogs coaching staff about his decision to leave, according to sources from ESPN. Fields, who was the top recruit in the 2018 ESPN 300, is looking to transfer to a different school in January.

The reason behind his potential transfer is the possibility of spending the next two seasons as a backup to starting quarterback Jake Fromm. On Tuesday, Fields entered the NCAA’s transfer portal, allowing other programs to reach out to him for a potential transfer.

If Fields is unable to secure a hardship waiver from the NCAA, he would have to sit out the 2019 season due to transfer regulations. Sources informed ESPN that Fields participated in practice on Monday and is expected to play for the No. 5 Bulldogs against No. 15 Texas in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Reports mention that Fields and his father have had multiple discussions with Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart regarding his future over the past few weeks. However, Fields has not formally requested a transfer as of now. If Fields decides to transfer, Fromm would be the only scholarship quarterback left on Georgia’s roster. The Bulldogs are actively pursuing quarterback Zach Calzada from Sugar Hill, Georgia, who is currently committed to Texas A&M.
