South Dakota State coach T.J. Otzelberger has agreed to a new five-year contract with the Jackrabbits. Initially hired in 2016 on a three-year deal, Otzelberger has now been offered an extension by the director of athletics Justin Sell, which will keep him with the team through the 2022-23 season.
Otzelberger, 41, has led the Jackrabbits to two consecutive NCAA tournament appearances since taking over from Scott Nagy. Currently, South Dakota State holds a 26-game home winning streak, the longest in Division 1. Sell praised Otzelberger’s success both on the court and with the student-athletes, academically and in the Brookings community.
The commitment of one of the country’s top coaches to stay with South Dakota State until 2023 is highly promising. Sell emphasized the aim to continue building on their success and pursuit of excellence. South Dakota State holds a 9-4 record and will face Eastern Washington on Tuesday.
