Odell Beckham Jr., a seasoned wide receiver, reached an agreement on Monday with the New York Giants for a lucrative five-year contract extension valued at $95 million. A reliable source disclosed that $65 million of the contract is guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson.This deal surpasses the average annual salary of $17 million of Antonio Brown from the Pittsburgh Steelers and eclipses the total guarantees of $55 million for Mike Evans from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Beckham was initially set to earn $8.4 million under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. With this new agreement, his 2018 contract has been restructured to a $1.459 million salary, supplemented by a $20 million signing bonus. Consequently, the Giants will enjoy a $3 million cap saving.
Dave Gettleman, the general manager of the Giants, expressed his satisfaction with the deal by saying, “We’ve secured him until he’s 108. I never doubted that we would reach an agreement.” He further added, “I’m pleased because both sides are content with the terms of the deal, which is crucial in contract negotiations. It’s a mutually beneficial agreement.”
For the past two years, Beckham has been eager to secure a contract extension and has exhibited optimism in recent weeks. His current contract extends through 2023. The new deal now paves the way for Beckham’s return to the field for the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 9. Beckham had been sidelined during the preseason due to an ankle injury sustained in October, but with the new contract in place, he is poised to make his comeback.
Beckham felt it was prudent to solidify a new contract at this juncture. The 25-year-old wide receiver has achieved a remarkable record of at least 90 catches, 1300 yards, and ten touchdowns in each of his first three professional seasons.
