Securing Taylor Lewan for the upcoming season was a top priority for the Tennessee Titans as the standout offensive lineman has proven his worth since being drafted in 2014. The Titans made a significant move by rewarding Lewan with a substantial five-year contract totaling $80 million, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in league history.
The Titans officially announced the contract extension on Friday, revealing that Lewan inked a deal worth $40 million, averaging $16 million annually, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The agreement, disclosed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, comprises $50 million in guarantees, indicating a considerable portion of the deal is secured for Lewan’s benefit.
While not a decision made without consideration, the move reflects the Titans’ recognition of Lewan’s impact. Having earned Pro Bowl appearances in the past two seasons, Lewan is a key player in the team’s tight-knit offensive line group. With the powerful running backs Dion Lewis and Derrick Henry in the mix, the Titans aim to strengthen their running game.
In the current NFL landscape where skilled offensive linemen are scarce, Lewan, at 27, stands out as a top-tier tackle, adding value to the Titans’ lineup.
With Lewan solidifying his position, the Titans, led by quarterback Mariota, are poised for an impressive season. The team can now focus on their upcoming games with confidence, knowing that their left tackle position is secured for the next five years.
