Bruce Bowen, a former player who won three championships with the San Antonio Spurs, has criticized Kawhi Leonard for his recent actions with the team, suggesting that there are only excuses being made. In a recent interview, Bowen mentioned that Leonard was misdiagnosed and received $18 million this year despite not playing a full season. Bowen expressed doubts about the team’s statements regarding Leonard’s best interests, calling the situation a joke.
Leonard, who played only nine games this season due to a quad injury, is now reportedly seeking a trade from San Antonio. Bowen voiced his opinion that Leonard might not be receiving the right advice, noting that the support system in San Antonio, with veterans like Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili, might have shielded him from certain realities.
As a key player in the Spurs’ championship wins in 2003, 2005, and 2007, Bowen emphasized that Leonard has not been transparent about his issues with the team. Bowen also questioned Leonard’s decision to rehab in New York, suggesting that true leadership means being with the team, especially during playoff games on the road. Bowen stressed the importance of camaraderie and loyalty within a team, expressing disappointment in players who do not offer support to their teammates in crucial moments. In contrast, R.C. Buford, the general manager of the Spurs, has stated that the franchise intends to retain Leonard despite his discontent.
