Kawhi Leonard has withdrawn from Team USA’s roster for the Paris Olympics after concerns arose during his training camp workouts with the team, as reported by Broderick Turner of the LA Times.

Leonard, who missed 12 of the final 14 games of the Los Angeles Clippers’ season due to right knee inflammation, is being sidelined by the same issue. He will be replaced by Derrick White, a guard for the Boston Celtics and an NBA champion, on the US roster.

It’s worth noting that Clippers coach Tyronn Lue serves as an assistant for Team USA.

According to USA Basketball officials, Leonard had been preparing for the Olympics and felt ready to compete after strong practices in Las Vegas. However, it was ultimately decided by USA Basketball and the Clippers that Leonard should prioritize getting ready for the upcoming NBA season rather than participating in the Olympics.

Grant Hill, the managing director of USA Basketball, emphasized that the decision was made with Leonard’s long-term health and readiness for the 2024-25 season in mind.

Expressing gratitude for Leonard’s commitment, Hill welcomed White, who is set to make his Olympic debut following a successful season with the Celtics.

While Leonard’s knee had shown signs of improvement in recent weeks, it was deemed best for him to refrain from competing at the Olympics.

Team USA is scheduled to play its first exhibition game against Team Canada on Wednesday night.
