Viewers familiar with the New Orleans Saints’ performance last season would have noted how the NFL team effectively utilized two standout players in a position traditionally reserved for just one player on the field.
Similarly, observers have seen how the Green Bay Packers have integrated their trio of potentially high-performing backs – Montgomery, Jamaal Williams, and Aaron Jones – into their lineup. Aaron Rodgers’ return to the game has brought hope after a challenging NFL season for the team.
It is a well-known fact that the NFL is a league where imitation is common. Therefore, it is not surprising that Coach Mike McCarthy might be taking a cue from Payton’s playbook. When questioned about whether he studied how the Saints utilized their running backs and if the Packers would follow suit, McCarthy chose not to reveal his strategy. In a post-offseason program interview, McCarthy mentioned that the plan is to operate with a committee of running backs, given the team’s three capable players.
According to reports, Ingram ranked fourth in the NFL in rushing yards with 1,124 and rushing average at 4.9. Kamara followed with 728 rushing yards and a 6.1 rushing average, ranking 26th. Ingram also stood 13th with 416 rushing yards and eighth in the league (58).
Moving on to Montgomery, Williams, and Jones from the Packers, all three players faced injury setbacks at various points in the previous season. Nevertheless, these players possess versatile skills, including running, receiving, and pass protection.
Although each player has demonstrated their strengths so far, Montgomery offers matchup advantages, Williams – a fourth-round selection – led the team in rushing last year, while Jones – a fifth-round pick – secured a game-winning 20-yard touchdown in overtime against the Buccaneers.
