Dennis Green served as the coach of the Vikings from 1992 to 2001. Over the course of his career, he coached a total of 171 games in ten seasons and achieved a record of 101-70. The late Dennis Green will now be honored with induction into the Vikings’ Ring of Honor during halftime of Minnesota’s game against the Bills on Sept. 23 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
He led the team to numerous playoffs and holds the second-most victories in franchise history after Bud Grant with 178 wins.
Green passed away in July 2016. During his tenure, he guided the Minnesota Vikings to four NFC Central Division titles and a spot in the NFC Championship game. In 1998, the team boasted the best offense in NFL history, scoring a remarkable 556 points, averaging 34.8 points per game, a record unmatched by any other NFL team.
Dennis Green began his NFL coaching career in 1992 when he was appointed by the Washington Touchdown Club. He received recognition as an NFL coach from Sports Illustrated and the Maxwell Club. Green fostered a strong connection with the community during his time in Minnesota, initiating Community Tuesdays as an outreach effort.
Mark Wilf, Co-owner of the Vikings, praised Green’s enduring impact on the team, describing him as a valued mentor and leader to all who had the privilege of knowing him. The NFL community is honored to immortalize Denny and his family in the Vikings Ring of Honor, and eagerly anticipates the induction ceremony in September.
Following the inductions of Randy Moss and Ahmad Rashad, the former receiver, Dennis Green will be the sole inductee in 2018, bringing the total number of esteemed members in the Ring of Honor to 24.
