Saints draft Marcus Davenport by paying an unusually high price

There was a lot of speculation that the Saints might plan to draft a quarterback when the team was on the clock after it took a surprising decision to trade 2019’s first-round draft pick to move up in 2018’s first round draft. This speculation was raised as that was the only position that the teams will give up in the two first-round picks. But instead, the Saints drafted Marcus Davenport, the pass rusher.

Several sports pundits stated that the NFL draft this year would be extra heavy. The Saints certainly did not feel like there was a value for them in the latter part of the 2018 first round.

Typically, this move by the Saints was never thought of. It was in the year 2003 when a team had last packaged two first-round draft picks to move up and draft a defensive team player. The Jets was the one who sent away two first-round draft picks to the Bears to get Dewayne Robertson.

As per ESPN, it was the first time that a team sent away first two round draft picks since the AFL-NFL merger to get a pick which is outside the Top 12. This quite really means that the Saints must think that Davenport is not that just good as a player but could also be a franchise-changing player, the type of pass rusher who will be able to make a difference between a team which lost in the divisional round of the playoffs in the last season and a team which can win the Super Bowl in this season. The best way to use Davenport’s playing skill as a pass rusher is by making sure that the pick traded away by the Saints is No. 32 overall.
