The Cleveland Browns have thrown quarterback DeShone Kizer away after facing a difficult season. The team’s new general manager John Dorsey agreed to deal Kizer to the Green Bay Packers.
As per sources, on Friday the Browns agreed to trade its quarterback to the Packers in exchange for cornerback Damarious Randall. Kizer will compete for the Packer’s backup job behind Aaron Rodgers. Kizer went 0-15 as a starter and led the NFL with 22 interceptions in a rookie season.
The Browns also pulled off deals to acquire quarterback Tyrod Taylor from the Bills Buffalo and wide receiver Jarvis Landry from Miami. Notably, Kizer was selected by the Browns in the second round last year. After a strange training camp in which he qualified above Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler on the depth chart, Kizer was named as Browns’ starter by the team coach Hue Jackson.
Although Kizer showed his talent and flashes of promise, the Browns decided that it was time for the team to move on. The 22-year old had completed 255 of 476 passes for 11 touchdowns and 2,894 yards. He even rushed for 419 yards and five TDs. As the teams were consistently blitzing him, Kizer did not look that comfortable in the pocket. He was even sacked 38 times.
In reality, Kizer’s days appeared numbered with the Browns as the team was expected to target a veteran in free agency and looks like the Browns will most likely use the No. 1 pick in 2018’s draft on a quarterback.
Kizer will have to try and earn a spot with the Browns and he will be in a similar sort of situation with the Packers again.
Jackson had feared that Kizer would struggle in his first year and those fears came a true week after week. Although Kizer never complained and continued to vow and make promises and come back as a better player, he failed the Browns’ expectations.
