Only the Patriots and the Saints tallied in more yards than the Steelers since the last five seasons. Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Todd Haley is out for the Steelers and will not have had his contract extended. After serving for the team for six long years, Haley is now expected to be replaced by quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner who has worked closely with Ben Roethlisberger, the veteran signal-caller for much time in his career.
In a statement, Coach Mike Tomlin said on Wednesday, “I have decided not to renew the contract for offensive coordinator Todd Haley. I would like to thank Todd for his contributions to our offence the past six years, and we wish him the best in his coaching future.”
In his six-year-long career, Talley helped the Steelers post the top-10 scoring offences in each of the last four seasons which is the franchise’s longest streak since the 1970s. Haley also played an important role in the draft evaluation of playmaking receivers JuJu Smith- Schuster and Martavis Bryant. The reason behind his exit is a poor relationship between him and Ben Roethlisberger. Fichtner began standing on the sideline along with Haley to communicate with Roethlisberger. This is Fichtner’s first NFL coordinator job, though he filled that role at the University of Memphis before coming to Pittsburgh in 2007.
Roethlisberger, who has averaged 297.6 passing yards per game since 2014, has stated that he will continue his game with coaches and players. He stated this during a radio show after a meeting with Haley.
Haley’s careers started as the Arizona Cardinals’ offensive coordinator in 2008. Then he appointed as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. He made a 19-26 record with the Chiefs before being fired from the 2011 season.
