In a statement on Sunday, the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats confirmed that they had offered international quarterback Johnny Manziel a contract. Manziel had previously informed about his 10-day window for the team to offer him a contract or else lose his negotiation rights. And now, by offering him the contract, the Tiger-Cats finally retain his rights for one more year. This will help both the sides to get enough time to negotiate and agree to a final deal.
As per reports, Manziel is offered a two-year contract which is believed to be a “competitive offer” and not just the league $54,000 minimum. In the NFL on December 27, 2015, the former first-round pick was last seen playing. Early on Sunday morning, Manziel gave a hint about a potential comeback to football by posting a photo on his Instagram handle along with a caption that read, “Just wait for it #ComebackSZN.”
In a comment, he had also replied back with a Canadian flag emoji which hinted at his contract offer to play in the CFL. June Jones, Tiger-Cats head coach was previously seen praising the player saying that Manziel would be “the best player to ever play” who has ever played in the CFL. He further said that Manziel‘s style of playing would be best understood in the CFL.
Pro Football of Famer Warren Moon and Doug Flutie are some of the other former renowned CFL quarterbacks. If Manziel is all prepared and has overcome the past couple of issues in his short NFL career, then he could be a potential player now who will be able to do wonders for the Tiger-Cats team which scored a record 6-12 in this past season.
Notably, Manziel is not the only player who is in the Tiger-Cats’ negotiation list. The team holds the negotiation rights to Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III as well. However, neither of the two have yet expressed their desire to play in the CFL.
