As the new season approaches, Joe Flacco finds himself in the unknown regarding whether he’ll start as the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback—a question that even his children have been asking.

Flacco shared that upon returning home from the Browns’ offseason program last June, his kids were eager to know if he secured the starting role. Like many fans, they are still in suspense.

“I think there’s been some communication between probably all the quarterbacks,” Flacco told reporters. “So, yeah, I guess I know a little bit what to expect, at least for the next week. But … it’s hard for me to tell what it’s going to look like, you know, two, three weeks from now.”

At 39, Flacco is part of a competitive group that also includes seasoned NFL player Kenny Pickett, rookie Dillon Gabriel, and fifth-round selection Shedeur Sanders. On the first day of training camp, Flacco did not engage in 11-on-11 drills, while the other three quarterbacks divided the reps.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski outlined a strategy to rotate quarterbacks through various team exercises with different offensive units, aiming for a seamless evaluation process. He emphasized the team’s intention to make decisions sooner rather than later.

Having joined Cleveland late in 2023 and contributed to their playoff run, Flacco aligns with Stefanski regarding the necessity for clarity in the quarterback situation. However, he recognizes that the decision is beyond his control.

“I really don’t have any control over it,” Flacco remarked. “So I’m not going to waste energy worrying about it.”
