Mason Alexander, a freshman cornerback at the University of Pittsburgh, tragically lost his life in a car accident on Saturday night in Fishers, Indiana.
As reported by Hamilton County police, the 18-year-old athlete was a passenger in a 2016 BMW. The driver attempted to pass a 2015 Toyota RAV4 but lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the roadway. The BMW ultimately crashed into a tree and ignited, with Alexander being pronounced dead at the scene.
Pitt’s head football coach, Pat Narduzzi, expressed his condolences in a statement regarding the new player, who had joined the team just in January.
“I received a call this morning that no parent, teacher or coach ever wants to get — the news of the sudden loss of a young and promising life,” Narduzzi expressed. “Our entire program is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mason Alexander’s passing.”
A four-star recruit hailing from Hamilton Southeastern High School, Alexander had committed to Pitt in June and officially signed with the program in December.
Just three days before the tragic accident, Pitt CB Mason Alexander shared his first media interaction as a collegiate player.

“Even during that short time, he made a great impression on all of us,” Narduzzi added. “Mason was proud and excited to be a Panther, and we felt the same way about having him in our Pitt family.”
“He will always be a Panther to us. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Alexander family, along with Mason’s many loved ones and friends.”
