Mike Greenberg is set to be the new host of ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown show, taking over from Sam Ponder, who was let go.
According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, Greenberg got the job over Laura Rutledge.
Ponder’s dismissal sparked controversy, with some speculating it was due to her political views. ESPN clarified that it was a cost-cutting decision as the fiscal year ends in September, which Marchand supported.
Although Ponder will be compensated fully, ESPN made the change to manage its finances. The move also serves to promote Greenberg, a favorite among ESPN executives. Greenberg, who is already a prominent figure on the network hosting ‘Get Up’ and ‘Greeny,’ has a strong presence with viewers. He previously led NBA coverage before passing the role to Malika Andrews, and he hosts the NFL Draft on ESPN, a prestigious role.
At 57, Greenberg was selected ahead of Laura Rutledge, a rising star at ESPN. Rutledge has previously been beat out by a long-time ESPN anchor in the past year despite her success hosting ‘NFL Live.’
Joining Greenberg in the studio will be Randy Moss, Rex Ryan, Tedy Bruschi, and Alex Smith. Adam Schefter, known for his insider information, will also be present.
