The revenue generated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup is apparently too tempting for the federation’s president to want to wait another four years.
According to the Daily Mail, Gianni Infantino wants to host the tournament every three years, having previously backed a proposal to have it held every two years. The latter proposal was binned, with UEFA and Conmebol successfully battling it, however, Infantino is at it again after seeing how successful the most recent competition was.
Though he was unable to secure support from players, clubs, and international confederations, the FIFA president has declared that an expanded version of the world’s most prestigious tournament will be held in 2025.
According to the report, Infantino is convinced that having the World Cup in the middle of a European winter was a “game-changer.”
The recent tournament in Qatar generated $8.19 billion, eclipsing the $1.01 billion churned by the previous World Cup, which was held in Russia. Such numbers would probably convince you that it would be best to have the World Cup more frequently if you were the president of FIFA too.
Unfortunately for Infantino, no changes can be made to the World Cup before 2030 as stakeholder talks over the 2024-2030 international calendar are nearly at an end, though discussions on the newer proposal are reportedly being held behind the scenes.
