Tragic Loss of Former Michigan Soccer Player David Carter Payne in Hit & Run Accident While On Scooter

David Carter Payne, a player for the Tormenta FC 2 team based in Statesboro, has sadly passed away due to a hit-and-run incident while he was on a scooter.

The team announced the heartbreaking news that Payne, a defender, was struck by a vehicle while riding his scooter. He was rushed to Memorial Health: Southeast Georgia Hospital for medical care.

Hours later, a statement was released by the team confirming Payne’s passing:

“The South Georgia Tormenta FC community mourns the tragic loss of Tormenta FC 2 defender David Carter Payne. Carter passed away on July 9.

Part of the 2022 USL League Two team, Payne was a fantastic athlete, teammate, and friend who will be deeply missed by all within the club.

After being involved in a vehicle-pedestrian accident in Statesboro, Georgia, Carter was hospitalized at Memorial Health: Southeast Georgia Hospital.

Today, Carter’s family, friends, and the entire Tormenta community are grieving his loss.”

Carter, who played college soccer at the University of Michigan, had dreams of earning a spot on Tormenta’s main team and securing a professional contract.
