A member of the Tormenta FC 2 team based in Statesboro has tragically lost his life due to a hit-and-run accident.
The heartbreaking news of defender David Carter Payne’s accident was revealed on Saturday. Payne was struck by a vehicle while on his scooter and was rushed to the Memorial Health: Southeast Georgia Hospital for medical care.
Tragically, a few hours later, the team shared a statement confirming Payne’s passing:
“South Georgia Tormenta FC is deeply saddened by the devastating loss of Tormenta FC 2 defender David Carter Payne. Carter passed away on July 9.
A valued member of Tormenta FC 2’s 2022 USL League Two squad, Payne was not only a remarkable athlete but also a great teammate and friend. His absence will be deeply felt by everyone associated with the club.
Following his involvement in a vehicle-pedestrian collision in Statesboro, Georgia, Carter was hospitalized at Memorial Health: Southeast Georgia Hospital.
Today, Carter’s family, friends, and the entire Tormenta Nation mourn his loss.”
Carter was a former soccer player at the University of Michigan.
The Michigan Men’s Soccer team expressed their sorrow over the loss of Carter Payne:
