Novak Djokovic emerged victorious in the quarter-finals against Berrettini in an intense five-set match on Wednesday. The 34-year-old Serbian clinched the victory with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 scoreline, securing his spot in the semi-finals where he will face Alexander Zverev.

Djokovic faced a setback in the first set against Berrettini, a trend that has been recurring in his recent matches. Nonetheless, he bounced back and dominated the proceeding sets. Despite the challenges, Djokovic’s focus lies on the fact that he is just two wins away from etching his name in the annals of tennis history.

A victory at this year’s US Open would grant Djokovic his 21st major title, surpassing tennis greats Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It would also mark the first calendar year grand slam in men’s tennis since Rod Laver achieved this feat in 1969.

Djokovic’s upcoming opponent, Zverev, approaches the match with a 16-game winning streak and an Olympic gold medal in men’s singles from Tokyo. The last time they met, Zverev emerged triumphant with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Djokovic in the semi-finals. On the same day Djokovic defeated Berrettini, Zverev secured a win against Lloyd Harris with a 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-4 scoreline.
