Serena Williams has made the decision to skip this year’s US Open due to an ongoing hamstring injury. The former world no. 1 cited her inability to fully recover as the reason for her withdrawal from the last major tennis tournament of the year.

Williams sustained the hamstring injury during her first-round match at Wimbledon against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. A slip on the wet grass court led to a tear in her right hamstring, forcing her to retire from the match. Since then, she has been sidelined from competition.

In an Instagram post, Williams announced, “After thoughtful deliberation and following the advice of my medical team, I have opted to withdraw from the US Open to give my body the necessary time to completely heal from the hamstring injury.

“New York is a vibrant city and one of my favorite venues to compete – I will miss the fan support but will be rooting for everyone from a distance. Thank you for your unwavering support and affection. I’ll be back soon.”

Despite nearing her 40th birthday, Williams remains determined to capture her 24th grand slam title to match Margaret Court’s record. While she showed promise early in the year by reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open, she faced challenges during the clay season.
