Nerlens Noel has taken legal action against his agent Rich Paul and sports agency Klutch Sports. According to a report by Darren Heitner of SportsAgentBlog.com, Noel alleges that Paul misled him into believing he was worth $100 million and promised to secure a maximum contract for him if he switched representation to Klutch Sports.
After parting ways with his then-agent Happy Walters to join Paul, Noel claims Paul advised him to reject a lucrative four-year, $70 million extension offered by the Mavericks. Instead, Noel was instructed to sign a one-year, $4.1 million qualifying offer. Consequently, Noel faced a challenging season marked by injuries as he asserts that Klutch Sports failed to provide any substantial strategies for securing long-term deals. Eventually, he settled for a modest two-year, $3.75 million contract with the Thunder, which he believes was predominantly influenced by Thunder players Russell Westbrook and Paul George rather than Paul.
The lawsuit details that during the 2018 free agency period, neither Paul nor anyone from Klutch Sports presented Noel with viable options or plans to secure a significant contract. Despite interest from teams like the Sixers, Clippers, and Rockets to negotiate with Noel, they reportedly struggled to establish contact with Paul.
Noel terminated his relationship with Klutch Sports in December 2020 and is seeking damages of around $58 million due to the missed opportunity with the Dallas extension. Subsequently, Noel has inked a new three-year, $32 million deal with the New York Knicks brokered by agent George Langberg.
