The future of wide receiver Michael Thomas with the New Orleans Saints beyond the 2021 season is uncertain amid recent controversy surrounding his relationship with the team.

The situation escalated when reports emerged that Thomas had been unresponsive to the team for three months during the offseason while delaying surgery. Thomas added fuel to the fire with a cryptic tweet hinting that he possesses information that could change the narrative that has been presented publicly.

In his tweet, Thomas wrote, “They tried to damage your reputation. You saved theirs by not telling your side of the story.”

Trade rumors have surfaced in light of this controversy, but Thomas’ contract presents a significant obstacle.

NFL analyst Bill Barnwell highlighted the financial implications of trading Thomas, stating that the Saints would need to absorb $32.6 million in dead money if they decide to move him.

Despite the financial implications, there is speculation that the Saints might consider trading Thomas given the circumstances. Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus suggested that the Saints, known for their unconventional moves, could entertain offers for Thomas, especially considering his recent injuries.

John Sigler of Saints Wire even proposed a potential trade scenario involving Thomas with the Jacksonville Jaguars, indicating a willingness to part ways with the star receiver in exchange for multiple players and draft picks.

Thomas, who has been with the Saints for his entire five-year career, had standout seasons in 2018 and 2019, earning Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors. However, his 2020 season was marred by injuries and a disciplinary suspension for a practice incident.
