Casey Stoney, a former England player, has been selected as the head coach for the newly expanded NWSL team in San Diego. Stoney left her role as the manager of Manchester United Women in May.

Stoney led the Manchester United Women’s team for three seasons and stepped down after the recent Women’s Super League season. Jill Ellis, the former head coach of the US women’s soccer team and current president of San Diego NWSL, praised Stoney, saying:

“Casey is an incredibly accomplished and talented English player. She seamlessly transitioned into the role of a manager and quickly transformed Manchester United Women into a competitive team. She has proven herself as one of the top managers in the league.”

In an interview with the San Diego club’s official website, Stoney expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Jill and this ownership group are dedicated to creating a top-tier club both on and off the field… I am excited to get started right away as we prepare for our first season in the NWSL next year.”

San Diego is gearing up for their inaugural season in the NWSL in 2022, alongside Angel City, a Los Angeles-based team co-owned by Natalie Portman, Jessica Chastain, and Serena Williams, among others.
