Andy Murray’s win in the opening round of Wimbledon on Monday follows a challenging period for the Scottish player, who faced multiple injuries and appeared to be nearing the conclusion of his career on several occasions.

Despite his struggles, Murray’s game against Basilashvili, the 24th seed, showcased a resurgence for the former Wimbledon champion. He clinched victory with a score of 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. During the initial two sets and as he advanced to a 5-0 lead in the third set, Murray seemed not only poised to win his first singles match at Wimbledon in four years, but also potentially in straight sets.

However, Murray then encountered a tough phase. He missed three opportunities to close out Basilashvili and lost seven consecutive games, dropping the third set.

Reflecting on this unexpected turn of events, Murray expressed, “That’s never happened to me before in my career, being three breaks of serve up and two sets to love up.” He attributed this lapse to a lack of match practice.

Murray shared that doubts about his stamina crept in as he questioned whether he could secure the victory in four or five sets. Despite these concerns, he pushed through and triumphed by taking the next set with a score of six games to three.
